Taco seasoning is way too easy to make to be buying prepackaged mixes filled with preservatives and fillers! This homemade mix takes less than 5 minutes to make!
It’s high time I do another seasoning mix, don’t you think?
The last seasoning mix I made was an Asian-inspired seasoning mix, and that was last January!
So basically, a whole year. Time just has a way of getting away from me it seems!
There are a couple questions that come to mind when it comes to homemade spice mixes, like today’s taco seasoning mix.
The big one is why??
I mean, they’re cheap enough to buy at the store, right? Many single-use packets are less than a dollar a piece. So why should I make my own? You may be asking.
And you know, that is a valid point. They are pretty cheap to buy. But there is one crucial element that you are missing when you buy anything pre-made.
One word: control.
You can control what goes into the spice mix. You don’t add wheat flour, sugar, or corn and potato starch to your seasoning mixes? I mean, when you buy them, you do. A lot of companies use starches or flours as fillers and silicon dioxide as an anti-caking agent.
If you have Celiac’s (the auto-immune disease that is triggered by gluten), be sure to make sure your seasoning mixes you’re buying are gluten-free.
Yes, we live in an age where we have to make sure our spice mixes are gluten-free. It drives me crazy too.
You also have control of how much of which spices go into your taco seasoning mix.
For me, I have gotten the right ratios for this recipe. This is how I enjoy my spice mix. But, you might look at it and say, Gem, you put waaaay too much cumin for my liking and we need to tone this down.
To which I say. “You have learned my padawan!!” (nbd, just a big Star Wars fan is all.)
But that is what I want you to do with my recipes. Use my recipe as a springboard to your perfect dish. (And if you’re a food blogger like me, make sure you remember who inspired you. 😉 )
The second question you might ask is, how easy is this taco seasoning to make?
How does adding a bunch of ingredients to a container and shaking it around sound? Yep, that easy. And these are all ingredients you probably already have in your spice cabinet anyway, so that makes it even easier!
